The Weekly gm - Apr. 3
Welcome to The Weekly gm, a short newsletter keeping you updated on the crypto space and previewing the week with ETH SD, meant for those that spent the weekend heads down building or touching grass
gm ETH SD community,
We hope everyone recovered from our April Fool’s announcement.
We’d never leave Ethereum!
This Week with ETH SD
1. FOAM Trust Zone Goes Live This Weekend
SD’s first Trust Zone for FOAM’s Proof of Location network is set to go live this Saturday!
During our three FOAM meetups, the community scouted locations for node placement, constructed the hardware nodes, and learned about the capabilities of Proof of Location. Since then, ChaseOnChain and Barry have been meeting with the FOAM team, prepping the nodes and hosting location for launch, and received help from rockstar community members Namdar and Bapic.
We’ll be releasing the recordings of our previous FOAM meetups this week on the FOAM Playlist of the ETH SD YouTube, so the community can get caught up on the journey and celebrate this weekend’s launch with us!
2. ETH SD Cohort 1 Testimonials
While we’re still buzzing off of the success of our first bootcamp with Alchemy University and their 7-week Ethereum Developer Bootcamp, we’re getting even more excited for our next cohort!
Below are a few testimonials:
“ETH SD Bootcamp x Alchemy University was one of the most impactful experience I could have in expediting my learning aspirations with respect to Web3 and smart contract development!” - Sam
“When I came to SD, I thought I would only be learning about blockchain. However, I ended up becoming a part of a community.” - Vanes
“The knowledge that ETH SD, AU and the crew managed to impart onto me was more than I was expecting to retain, and knowledge aside, I feel I have gained so much more. The community as a whole has been so accepting and encouraging to double-down on what makes me the best asset to the industry that I can be, and has planted myself as an integral part into the ecosystem. I can now take a dApp idea to complex live product, and I've managed to make friends along the way. I guarantee if you take this course and apply yourself, you can surpass the possibilities of what you can do, and more importantly, who you can become.” - Bapic
For those students that passed, a Soulbound NFT credential is on the way! We’ll drop the artwork soon.
3. Cohort 2 Sign-Up Form
We’ve dropped the sign-up form for cohort 2!
sign up, sign up, sign up
4. March Mingle Recap
Hosted every year, March Mingle is one of SD’s biggest tech and startup networking events. ETH SD attended for the first time in 2022, and was excited to return for this year’s iteration.
We can’t wait to return next year, keep advocating for the local adoption of crypto, and see more crypto representation in SD’s tech and startup scene.
What’s Being Built
1. Twitter Source Code & Algorithm
On Friday, Twitter’s source code and proprietary algorithm was made public for the first time.
Who’s forking first?
2. Telegram $USDT Transfers
One of the world’s most popular secure messaging apps, Telegram, is now allowing users to send each other tokens of the world’s largest stablecoin by market cap, $USDT.
3. Another AI: Google’s Bard
Continuing through big tech’s AI race, Google has now entered the chat. While the explosion of the most recent GPT iterations have drawn comparisons to themselves and Bing’s version alike, Google’s Bard is trying to keep up.
Who will be next to announce an AI model?
Last Week in Crypto
1. U.S. Crypto Regulatory Update
Uncle Sam has been keeping busy during the bear. Firstly, the US government sold a portion of the Bitcoin repossessed from the Silk Road case. Throughout the year, they’ll sell about 41k BTC remaining from the initial seizure.
Secondly, Congress continues to maliciously engage with crypto at an industry and consumer level.
In addition to its introduction of the RESTRICT ACT, which contains some unnerving legislation, Senator Elizabeth Warren has kicked off an “anti-crypto” campaign ahead of her re-election.
ETH SD is currently enlisting for the pro-crypto army.
Thirdly, crypto exchange Bittrex announced Friday that it is ending operations in the US, citing the current regulatory climate.
2. Brian Armstrong’s Retort to the AI Open Letter
Last week, an open letter signed by some notable names in the tech and policy realms called for a pause in AI tech development. While the wave of AI has been a disruptor to say the least, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says that’s no reason to hit the killswitch.
3. Hedera Makes Headway
Hedera, a “high throughput and fast finality” public blockchain, is seeing progress in adoption as noted in recent developments. Providing a more favored solution than Mastercard’s Provenance (TIL Mastercard has a blockchain offering), the chain is now hosting the supply chain entity, Fresh Supply Co.
In addition to the win over CeFi, the Hedera network was shouted out by the World Economic Forum.
See you next week,
